Databricks has open sourced most of the technology behind its Delta Lake, including APIs, with the launch of Delta Lake 2.0. The move towards open standards has been welcomed, as previously vendors had cited the closed nature of the Delta Lake table format compared to open formats like Apache Iceberg. Customers can still use Iceberg’s table format to enable analytics and machine learning workloads in Delta Lake, however, Databricks still favors its own table format, claiming that it is open and battle-tested for demanding workloads.
