In March 2023, Chiara Coetzee used GPT-4 to generate an entire novel from scratch, including the title, genre, story, characters, settings, and all the writing, with no human input. The result was Echoes of Atlantis, a fantasy adventure novel with 12 chapters and 115 pages. Through iterative refinement, bounding techniques, and continuity notes, Coetzee was able to successfully navigate GPT-4s tendencies to go too far ahead and improvise, ensuring a mechanically and fully automated process. This project demonstrates the current possibilities and limitations of using language models like GPT-4 to generate creative works from a single prompt.
