JupyterLab 4.0: A Full-Featured Development Environment with Improved Performance and Accessibility

The Jupyter contributor community has released JupyterLab 4.0, the next major version of their development environment. The new release boasts significant performance improvements, including faster tab-switching, and better performance with long notebooks. CodeMirror, the text editor, has been updated to CodeMirror 6, bringing accessibility, performance, and customization improvements. Real-time collaboration has been moved to a separate package, and the Extension Manager now includes prebuilt Python extensions and extensions from PyPI, eliminating the need to build. Additionally, there are numerous UI improvements, accessibility enhancements, and bug fixes. Developers should use Node.js v18 or newer for continued updates through at least the end of 2023.
