Nick Lane: Origin of Life, Evolution, Aliens, Biology, and Consciousness | Lex Fridman Podcast #318

Duration : 03:43:01

Nick Lane, a renowned biochemist at University College London, suggests that the origin of life on Earth involved the reaction between carbon dioxide and hydrogen, as this creates energy. Although this reaction alone would not create cells, the conditions on Earth at that time, particularly the presence of hydrothermal vents that generated hydrogen and membrane-like pores, made it possible for cells to form. Lanes research consists of experiments that aim to understand what caused life to develop on Earth and the fundamental reasons for its formation. He also argues that it is crucial to understand why life on Earth is made up of cells, carbon, and electric charges. Although oxygen is vital to the history of life, it was not present at the origin of life on Earth.
