Holly Cummins, senior principal software engineer on the Quarkus team at Red Hat, discusses the challenges that come with cloud adoption in her upcoming GOTO Amsterdam 2022 talk titled Cloud Chaos and Microservices Mayhem. Cummins points out that while the industry has been talking about cloud for a while, many assumptions baked into technology do not work well with the cloud. Additionally, practices and tools that once made sense for risk reduction in software engineering are no longer effective in the cloud era. Cummins notes that observability tool adoption lags behind observability standards, and releasing continuously and managing testing and risk remain challenges. Complicating matters further is the issue of versioning and compatibility when others consume a service.
