Eliezer Yatkowski, a researcher and philosopher, expressed concern about the increasing intelligence of GPT-4 and the fact that we do not have any guard rails or tests to determine if there is a mind inside the AI. He suggests a rigorous approach for the whole AI community to investigate these questions, which could take decades. One approach is training GPT-3 to detect conversations about consciousness and exclude them from the training data sets when retraining a model the size of GPT-4, without explicit discussion of consciousness, to try and interrogate what it says. However, it still wouldnt be definitive. Yatkowski suggests stopping now and reaping the rewards of the technology already developed.
