Welcome to the 7th edition of the National Intelligence Councils Global Trends report. Published every four years since 1997, Global Trends assesses the key trends and uncertainties that will shape the strategic environment for the United States during the next two decades. This edition explores structural forces in demographics, environment, economics, and technology, as well as emerging dynamics in societies, states, and the international system. It also discusses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and presents five potential scenarios for the world in 2040, including a resurgence of open democracies led by the United States.
