In a recent move, DoorDash has significantly optimized its cloud infrastructure costs by implementing zone-aware routing with its Envoy-based service mesh and utilizing its Cell-Based Architecture. This implementation allowed DoorDash to efficiently direct traffic within the same availability zone (AZ), minimizing expensive cross-AZ data transfers. By modifying its in-house custom service mesh control plane to provide Envoy with AZ information and utilizing the Cell-Based Architecture, DoorDash achieved reduced data transfer costs and improved fault isolation in its system.
